Introducing the Inaugural 2016 Van Lier Fellowships for Acting and Directing

The Asian American Arts Alliance, with support from the New York Community Trust, will be administering the Van Lier Fellowships which will grant fellows of various disciplines over the next three years. This year the Alliance will be recognizing artists in the categories of acting and directing.

The purpose of this fellowship is to develop early-career, individual Asian American artists living in New York City. The Alliance will grant two eight-month fellowships to one Asian American actor and one Asian American director who are still early in their career, whose work shows outstanding promise, and who may benefit from further professional artistic development, and who is of limited financial means.

Each fellow will each receive an unrestricted cash stipend of $12,000, which begins in July 2016 until February 2017, and an fellowship tailored to respond to the unique needs of each individual, which includes artistic mentorship with an established artist professional in their mid-career, leadership coaching, and technical support. Fellows will also have their profiles featured on the Alliance website.

The Alliance’s mission is to strengthen Asian American arts and cultural groups through resource sharing, promotion, and community building. In line with these efforts, it is the aim of the Alliance’s Van Lier Fellowships to develop early-career, individual Asian American artists living in New York City. The fellowship was created by the will of Sally Van Lier and the New York Community Trust continues to carry out their legacy of arts appreciation by supporting arts and training groups to provide education and other support.
